‘Happy Endings’ star Eliza Coupe dons sexy monokini for Esquire

“Happy Endings” star Eliza Coupe is showing off her fantastic figure and her sharp wit in the April issue of Esquire.

The funny woman, 31, shows off her curves in a sexy black monokini for the magazine’s “Funny Joke from a Beautiful Woman” feature.

Coupe’s contribution?

“A man races into a bar, sweating and visibly shaken. He turns to all the patrons and starts yelling, ‘Does anyone own a 6-foot penguin?’” the comic started.

“All the patrons shake their head. The guy says, ‘Damn, I hit a nun,’” the actress quipped.

Coupe, who stars alongside Elisha Cuthbert and Casey Wilson on the ABC sitcom, opened up about her upbringing. Coupe may look like the height of femininity these days, but in her childhood, she enjoyed brawling over a hockey puck with her two brothers.

“I was basically raised as a third son,” the star confessed. “But I’ve girlied out.”

Coupe also admits that she’s still sweet on her childhood celebrity crush, Jim Carrey. She even had a run-in with the “Ace Ventura” star.

“I was in the back at this awards show and kind of got pushed off to the side and backed into something I thought was just a bench,” the actress explained. “I looked over my shoulder, and there’s Jim Carrey sitting on a crate. My butt was in his face.”

Alas, Coupe didn’t grab the opportunity to meet “The Mask” comedian.

“I could have said anything. Like, ‘How’s it going? I’m attracted to you,’” Coupe recalls. “But I just said sorry and walked away. That was me.”

Eliza Coupe Discusses Life After CalArts

Along with fellow CalArts’ School of Theater alumnae Alison Brie (“Community”) and Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”), Eliza Coupe is making a splash in the world of comedy. She stars in the recently released romantic comedy, “Shanghai Calling,” and can also be seen on the ABC ensemble sitcom “Happy Endings.”

During a recent phone interview, we talked to Coupe (Theater BFA 06) about her work on Shanghai Calling, her acting career and advice for the graduating class of actors who are heading east for the New York Showcase on Monday.

Shanghai Calling was shot in six weeks in Shanghai and required Coupe’s expat character to be fluent in Mandarin. Coupe said she had about two weeks to immerse herself in the pinyin (phonetic) system before leaving, practicing two hours each day with a teacher here in LA.

“I think it’s hilarious, but when I got the call about this film, I was actually coming back from a French lesson,” she said. “I thought learning a language is like learning a language…no it’s not. Learning Chinese was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I’m not a mathematical person, and Mandarin is incredibly mathematical.”

Coupe said the learning was an important part of the process. “As an actor, it was important to me to actually act and not just mimic, so I needed to know what [my character] was saying.” The hard work paid off, with the film and Coupe getting good notices from Variety and the Los Angeles Times, among others.

While her comedy career’s now in high gear, Coupe is the first to admit that the road wasn’t easy. “I took a class at the Groundlings and was not asked to move forward,” she said. “In their defense, I was not in a place where I could actually take in what I was learning. I needed to grow up a little bit…I wasn’t ready for it, and it showed.”

She retreated to her family’s New Hampshire home before making the move to New York, where she worked as a waitress and bathroom attendant in Times Square. In New York, Coupe said that she’d buy one ticket to either the Upright Citizen’s Brigade or the People’s Improv Theater and watch the sets from opening to last call, breaking down what the players were doing.

Damon Wayans Jr. Poised to Rejoin “New Girl” Cast for Major Season 3 Stint

Happy Endings‘ Damon Wayans Jr. is thisclose to hooking up with the Girl that got away.

TVLine has learned exclusively that Wayans is nearing a deal to reprise his New Girl role of Coach for a significant Season 3 arc.

You’ll recall Wayans appeared in the New Girl pilot, but was forced to drop out when Happy Endings scored a surprise Season 2 renewal; Lamorne Morris’s Winston was brought in to fill the void. Endings‘ official (and extremely unfortunate) demise paved the way for Wayans’ likely return. (Fox declined to comment for this story.)

Jake Johnson, who’s currently shooting the comedy Let’s Be Cops with Wayans in Atlanta, kicked up the Coach comeback buzz last month when he told TVLine in the wake of Happy Endings ABC cancellation that he’d be thrilled to “welcome [Wayans'] back to the loft,” adding, “I would be surprised if he doesn’t come back for a while. There would be such funny episodes with the Coach seeing what’s happened in the past two years since he’s [been] gone.”

New Girl kicks off its third season on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Happy Endings EPs Reveal What Would’ve Happened in Season 4

Sad Happy Endings fans hoping for closure in the wake of the ABC comedy’s untimely (and no-longer-unofficial) cancellation are in luck.

No, sorry — not luck as in the beloved sitcom which boasted the rapidest-fire repartee this side of Gilmore Girls is Kickstarting its way to the big screen a la Veronica Mars. Just luck as in series creator David Caspe and executive producer Jonathan Groff are breaking their silence about the show’s fight for survival (and how close they were to sealing a deal with USA), the amahzing legacy the series leaves behind and what they had in mind for season 4 (Penny and Dave?).

TVLINE | The talks with USA Network — how close were you to a deal?
CASPE |
It was as close as it could come without happening.
GROFF | I think USA, to their credit, really wants to be in the business of making original programming. It sounded like it would have been hard for them to do everything they wanted to do in terms of development [had they picked up the show].

TVLINE | Were there any other serious suitors in the mix?
CASPE | I think there were. We don’t know the specifics; that’s all sort of above our pay grade. But there were ongoing talks with a lot of places. It just didn’t work out. The truth is, how many shows have moved networks ever? It’s very difficult to do, and there’s probably some financial algorithmic reason for that that I don’t even understand.
GROFF | Sony took the lead on this and was really great about pounding the pavement. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re like, “Is there one more last call we can make to pull this off?”

It’s Official: No Season 4 For Happy Endings

Very sad news, guys. I had been holding out hope that a network would come to the rescue for our beloved show. Sadly, that has not happened. R.I.P. Happy Endings. </3

Happy Endings won’t get one: The cancelled ABC comedy is officially done and will not continue on another network, TVLine has confirmed.

Sony Pictures TV, which produces the series, has ended its search for a new home for the ensemble sitcom.

As we told you earlier this week, the cast’s contract options expire this weekend, and no network has stepped up to continue the quirky comedy.

A possible move to USA Network — widely believed to be Endings‘ most likely savior — was nixed earlier this month. NBC and TBS reportedly were possible contenders as well, but neither panned out.

Happy Endings’ Options Dwindling in Wake of USA Network’s Failed Rescue Attempt

It’s looking less likely that Happy Endings will live up to its title.

Three weeks after ABC pulled the plug on the beloved (yet under-watched) comedy, sources confirm to TVLine that the show’s Season 4 options are narrowing now that USA Network has passed on picking up the series.

According to Vulture, which first broke the news of the collapse in talks between Happy Endings producer Sony and USA, TBS (which famously rescued Cougar Town from ABC’s scrap heap) and NBC remain in the mix. TVLine’s sister site Deadline, meanwhile, has floated the idea Netflix or Amazon acquiring the show.

“Sony is still working on it,” a Happy source tells TVLine. “They’re battlers.”

But time is running out. Sony’s options on the show’s principal cast are set to expire later this month.
